IA 0104 “I Fall to Pieces” – Angel

Case File # 0104 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 4 titled “I Fall to Pieces”

Case Summary

Cordelia stresses to Angel that they need to start making money before too long because coffee doesn’t grow on trees. Well, actually it does, but money doesn’t and money buys coffee so… you get the picture.

Doyle’s vision points Angel to Melissa who is in some kind of trouble.

Turns out that some kind of trouble is that she is being stalked by a Dr. who has delusions of a deep meaningful relationship between the two of them.

But this is no ordinary Dr. The reason he can so effectively stalk Melissa is because he can separate his body parts and send them off to do his bidding, then reattaches them when they are done.

Angel and the group find out how he has managed to be such an effective stalker but things are escalating and now it looks like he is out to hurt Melissa.

Hijinks ensue, Angel kills all the pieces of the Dr. and Melissa regains control of her life, oh and she pays her bill.

Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under

The courtyard of Melissa’s apartment building will later be used for the courtyard of the Hyperion Hotel starting with Season 2.

In this episode, Christopher Hart plays the disembodied hand. It’s basically his way of life – he also played the role of “Thing” in The Addams Family movies and the evil hand in the movie Idle Hands.

This episode was originally a BtVS script, but the producers decided it was more fitting to Angel’s style.

The title “I Fall To Pieces” was a hit song by Patsy Cline in 1962(In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Prophecy Girl”, Xander listened to this song in his room after Buffy refused to go to a dance with him).

Andy Umberger, who played Ronald, is one of the few actors who Joss Whedon refers to as “hat trick” actors (meaning that they’ve appeared on all three of his TV series). Mr. Umberger also played the demon D’Hoffryn in four episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the captain of the Dortmunder in the pilot episode of Firefly.

So let’s get to the disussion

Why do the eyes float?

Angel’s exposition is very forced

Kate shows up in this episode, I almost kind of like her as a straight cop character.

Cordelia and the charging customers for their help

Ethical

Necessary

Angel get’s darted and drugs knock him out, why?

Stalking as a topic, it’s about fear and control

The guy has issues and tries to exert himself over women

The capabilities, the potential of the human mind is explored a little bit.

Didn’t like it.

Sunnydale has the hellmouth which is their get out of jail free, this was a pit of a stretch.

The cop who comes into her apartment was a horrible bit of acting.

Ronald was creepy

Talk about all the things Ronald was and Ronald did

The whole shooting out body parts as a method of attack was horrible.

Melissa – does she represent anything specific? Seems like a very shallow character to me.

Didn’t like this episode. Too much cheese and forced exposition, the weakest episode of the series so far by a long shot.

It felt like the writers had the idea of what they wanted to do but had no idea how to make it all tie together and just kind of forced it.

Rate the episode

Episode starts at a 2, I would be tempted to give it a 0 but there were a few scenes that were tolerable.

Bonus point… I am trying to think of something that merits a bonus point and I can’t think of anything.

I could take tons of points away but that would mean a big negative score. I don’t want to give it a negative score, but it isn’t going to get any higher than a 2.

So no bonus points given or taken away, just a straight 2 which could have been a 0 to be honest with you.

Reminders

That is going to wrap things up for Investigating Angel, thanks for tuning in, I will see all of you at the Hellmouth Podcast next week for the episode “Beer Bad” or back here at Investigating Angel for “Room With A View” the week after.
IA 0102 “Lonely Hearts” – Angel

Case File # 0102 its time to start investigating Angel, Season 1 Episode 2 titled “Lonely Hearts”

Case Summary

Doyle gets a vision that someone in a bar is going to be hurt.

Angel and the crew go to the bar and while Cordelia hands out their new business cards, Angel tries to find someone who needs to be saved.

They don’t find the victim in time. It turns out there is a burrowing demon trolling through the singles scene looking for a host that the demon is compatible with. If the two aren’t compatible, the demon finds another host and kills the current one.

Angel meets Kate a single girl living in LA. The two of them seem to have a bit of awkward chemistry but a lot of this goes kapooey when we find out that Kate is a cop and she finds out that Angel has a tendency to show up around dead bodies.

Angel continues looking for the demon to try and stop it before it kills again. When he finally catches up to the demon it is after Kate.

There is a big fight, hijinks ensue but Kate and Angel make it out alive and the demon does not.

Kate confesses that she illegally searched Angel’s place because she wants to have a fresh start with him. Angel doesn’t go for the relationship, but he does tell Kate that if she ever needs help he will be around.

Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under

Originally, David Fury had written a darker script called “Corrupt.” In that script, Kate was a prostitute, and Angel licked blood off of a murder victim. Copies of the script are floating around on-line.

The phone number on Angel’s business cards is; 213-555-0162. The “555″ exchange is commonly used in entertainment because it is reserved for information services. This means that no active number will use the exchange. The “213″ area code identifies the location as Los Angeles

David Boreanaz does the “previously on Angel” voiceover for the first time on the series.

Tracy Stone, who played the Pretty Girl (Marcie), also played on Malibu Shores with Charisma Carpenter in the episode “The Fall” in 1996

Doyle explains that the invitation rule for vampires only stays in effect while the owner of the home is alive

So let’s get to the disussion

Was not looking forward to this podcast. This episode is a little bit disappointing for me and I felt like this was not the strongest follow up to the City Of episode. But when I sat down to prepare for the podcast, I asked myself “Bryan what are the writers trying to say? What are they trying to get across or explore in this episode?

Lets talk about Kate. We get introduced to a new character in Kate. Even on first viewing it is obvious that the original intention was to have Kate be a recurring character. I think they probably even wanted Kate to help create sexual tension between her and Angel.

Cordelia and Doyle

No Wolfram and Heart in this episode

This episode is about loneliness and that search for the ‘special someone’

I am going to use a very immature and cheesy metaphor in this episode but it was the only way that I could think of to try and tie a lot of this stuff together so here it goes.

So why is dating like a twisted game of go fish you ask? Well let me break it down for you.

Lets talk about where people go to meet people. In this episode we see them go to a bar or a club and I think that is kind of representative of all the various places you ‘could’ go to meet people.

Work, school, club/bar, church, meet someone through a friend

A lot of these are even mentioned in the episode.

Is it any wonder that people hate dating, hate going through that pain and having to start over. Such limited opportunities to meet people to find that one person in all of LA or all of California, all of the world that you can have a long-lasting, healthy relationship with. That one person that at some point you won’t have to worry anymore because all of the cards have been played and neither of you has called go-fish.

Why is rejection so hard? Even very early on in dating rejection can be difficult to deal with.

So let’s back up a little bit and talk about what happens after one game ends and before another one begins.

So when all of that is said and done, some people end up just being lonely. They give up and don’t even try anymore. Rather than deal with the hurt, they’d rather just not play go-fish at all.

This is where Angel is, this is the beginning and the end of the episode. Now Angel has a very unique set of cards that he brings to the table when he plays go fish.

So, Why do humans crave companionship? I have spent most of the podcast now telling all of you how much dating/ go fish sucks. So now that I have many of you completely bummed out let’s talk about why we shouldn’t lose hope.

Here is why I think we keep trying and we don’t lose hope.

So I know that we talked very little about the actual episode itself. Hopefully somewhere in all of that you can see where it relates to what is happening in this episode of the show. I felt like the message was far bigger and far more important that the actual elements that make up the plot. I probably need some kind of disclaimer in their somewhere to about how I am not a licensed counselor and any statements or claims made in this podcast are for entertainment purposes only, etc. etc.

Rate the episode

Hard to give out bonus points for this episode, there isn’t a lot which I think merits bonus points other than the business cards.

I think the message is pretty good and some of the metaphors used are interesting.

This episode starts at a 4 ends at a 6. I just didn’t really get into this episode like I had hoped.

Hello and welcome to the Investigating Angel podcast, I am your host Bryan Curry

Case Summary

o Angel finds himself trying to adjust to life in Los Angeles. He has not abandoned his cause of helping fight vampires and the forces of darkness, but he is finding it more difficult feeling- in general.

o Doyle arrives and after recapping some of the events of the Buffy series to catch new viewers up on who Angel is and where he came from, tries to give Angel a little more direction and purpose by telling him about the powers that be and his mind throttling visions.

o The first vision is about a girl named Tina who needs Angel’s help so he goes to try and find her, and find out how he can help.

o Angel finds out about Russell, Tina’s ex who is causing her some problems.

o While at a party with Tina, Angel runs into Cordelia who is in LA now persuing an acting career which is not quite going as she planned.

o Angel rescues Tina from Russell’s thugs who try and force her to return to him.

o When Tina finds out that her meeting with Angel wasn’t just a random occurrence she runs off back to her apartment to pack her things and leave town.

o Russell finds her there at her apartment and reveals that he is a vampire and kills her.

o Angel finds Tina’s body and then goes to stock up on weapons and grabs Doyle to go pay Russell an unpleasant visit.

o Russell in the meantime has decided to replace Tina with Cordelia for the evening.

o Cordelia recognizes almost immediately that Russell is a vampire, she is from Sunnydale after all.

o Angel arrives just in time to prevent Cordelia from being eaten. He fights Russell off just enough for the two of them to escape.

o While Russell is meeting with his law firm Wolfram and Heart trying to locate Angel, the man himself shows up and Angel kills Russell by throwing him out the window of a skyscraper into the sunlight.

o Lindsey, the lawyer from Wolfram and Heart seems less concerned about the death of Russell than he does the arrival of what he says is a new player in Los Angeles.

o With the new group of Angel, Doyle and Cordelia assembled, a plan is formed that they will work together to help the people of Los Angeles that need them, for a small fee in order to cover Cordelia’s salary.

o Angel seems to have found something that he was looking for in Los Angeles, a purpose…

Missy’s Fun Facts from Down Under

o The vampire that tells Angel to piss off in this episode is played by Josh Holloway who would later go on to play the character Sawyer on the hit show Lost.

o In the original script, after Angel feels Tina’s dead body for a pulse, he tasted the blood that got on his fingers. This was filmed, but eventually cut.

o The LA public library was originally going to play a large part in the series. Tons of stock footage of Angel using computers and books was shot, but was only ever used for this episode.

o All of the vampires’ faces in this episode are different from any other incarnation of “vamped” faces on Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel. Joss Whedon decided to experiment with the make-up to try and make them look scarier. He decided they looked silly, and in subsequent episodes went back to the normal vampire faces.

o City Of was one of the pilot episodes of several popular WB series (along with Felicity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson’s Creek) that were featured in The WB’s farewell broadcast on September 17, 2006.

o Doyle wasn’t originally supposed to be an Irishman but was written as such when Glenn Quinn was cast as Doyle. The role of Doyle was Glenn Quinn’s first role where he was able to use his own Irish accent.

o Angel’s sidekick for the series wasn’t initially intended to be Doyle. The original scripts featured Whistler who appeared in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes “Becoming Part One” (2×21) and “Becoming Part Two” (2×22).

o (Max Perlich turned down the offer ,because he had just filmed a pilot for another network)

o In the opening of the credits there is a shot of a girl standing on an empty street. That scene actually comes from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Anne” (3×01).

o David Boreanaz (Angel) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase) are the only actors to appear in the pilots of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

o Christian Kane originally auditioned for the part of Riley Finn on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Series creator (of both shows) Joss Whedon was so impressed he offered him the part of Lindsey.

o Angel drives a black 1968 Plymouth GTX convertible.

So let’s get to the disussion

o How the beginning ties into Buffy

o Angel, reeling from his heartache over Buffy

o Add to that, that the last time Angel got close to a group of people it backfired when he turned into Angelus, he is trying to stay cut off so that he doesn’t hurt anyone

o but then Doyle arrives tells him that being cut-off from people could just as easily lead to him hurting them.

o So let’s talk about Doyle a little bit. let’s talk about what we know about Doyle after this first episode…

o Tina – I think that the big thing to understand about Tina is that she is not just-Tina. I think that in this first episode Tina represents a lot of the same things that the City of Los Angeles represents throughout most of this series, at least the early part of the series and that is hopelessness and broken dreams.

o Cordelia – Let’s talk a little bit about another familiar face that we get to see in this episode

o So we have a bit of a new family being formed here in Los Angeles with these three.

o Wolfram and Heart – Lindsey

o Russell – What he represents

o So in some ways, Russell and Angel are kind of a starting point or a focus point for Season 1 as a whole in the Angel series and it is great!

o The Powers That Be

§ Who are they? Who knows

o Angel

§ Like I said, surprisingly believable as a leader

§ Good to see a little bit of the humorous side of Angel

§ When he is not playing the role of Buffy’s sidekick I like Angel a lot more.

Batman shot at the end of the episode

Rate the episode

o Bonus point for Cordelia recognizing Russell is a vampire.

o Bonus point for the batman moment at the end of the episode

o Bonus point for Angel being so much more interesting w/o having to be evil Angelus.

o Bonus point because we get to see a little bit of the comical side of Angel which we didn’t really get to see in the Buffy series.

o Bonus point for the concept of bringing these three hard luck cases together to help people. They were able to create a little family similar to the Scoobies without having to copy the scoobies mold and so I think it was masterfully done.

o Episode starts at an 8 and ends at a 13

Hello, my name is Bryan and I wanted to introduce the Investigating Angel podcast. This is a podcast for all you Whedon fans out there who love the Angel series and since the show went off the air have been looking for a place where you can interact with myself a community of fans who love the show as much as you do.

So who am I? Well you may know me from the Hellmouth Podcast. In 2009 I launched the Hellmouth Podcast to chronicle the adventures of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series one episode at a time. The Hellmouth Podcast is approaching the end of season 3 and so it made sense that it was time to continue both Angel and Buffy’s story beyond season 3.

I am a big fan of all of Joss Whedon’s shows and I try to bring my love and enthusiasm of the shows into each and every podcast so I am very excited to be starting investigating angel very soon.

Here’s what you can expect from the new podcast.

Case Summary – A the beginning of each podcast I will summarize the events of the episode in 2-3 minutes just to refresh everyone on the events of that episode so that we are all on the same page, but that is the extent of the hard core recap.

From there it is going to be a discussion of the themes, story arcs, character developments and any and everything that randomly pops into my head while watching the episode. The goal of the podcast is to give you a new perspective on the show, make you watch it and love it in ways that you had never thought of before. We will get down and dirty and if I like something I will tell you, if I don’t like something trust me I will tell you. If you don’t believe me, ask one of the Hellmouth Podcast listeners about the Ted Debacle earlier this year.

I also will have co-hosts from time to time. Podcast listeners are welcome to go to the forums and signup for an episode that you love and would like to co-host and let everyone know what you thought about the episode.

I will rate each episode so you can get a feeling for where I think it stands in relation to the rest of the episodes in the season or series and then it’s a free for all from there.

Sometimes it will be listener emails and voicemails. Sometimes it will be me updating you on things happening in the Investigating Angel community.

That community is something that I wanted to talk about as well. As I stated earlier, I started podcast last year (2009) for those of you listening ‘from the future’ and the Hellmouth Podcast has built itself a nice little community we like to call the Hellmouth Empire.

The Hellmouth Empire Forums, the Facebook Page, Twitter, email, voicemail and the monthly newsletter are some of the different ways that I interact with the Hellmouth Empire and the Hellmouth Empire interacts with each other.
